Build leadership depth
A business can be easier to understand and transition when responsibilities are clear and capable leaders can make decisions. Consider where approvals bottleneck, who owns customer relationships, and which roles would be difficult to replace.
Make financial information useful
Reliable monthly reporting, job-level profitability, disciplined work-in-progress accounting, and a clear separation of owner expenses can help you understand performance. Consistent records also make it easier for qualified professionals to assess the company when needed.
Create repeatable operating practices
Document how work is estimated, scheduled, delivered, inspected, and collected. Repeatable practices do not have to be complicated; they should help the next person deliver a consistent customer experience without relying on one individual’s memory.
Understand customers, backlog, and risk
Review customer concentration, contract terms, warranty exposure, insurance, safety practices, and backlog assumptions. The goal is not to eliminate every risk, but to know where it exists and how it is managed.
